Diffusion dolomite, Fremont County, Colorado Description: Dolomite is a term used to refer to a specific mineral, CaMg(CO 3 ) 2 , and also to a rock (such as this one) composed primarily of that mineral. This sample is nearly 100% dolomite. The brown and white striping is due to hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ) that stains the surfaces of grains in some layers. The sample is 10 cm across. These Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) nadir-camera images of eastern China compare a somewhat hazy summer view from July 9, 2000 (left) with a spectacularly dusty spring view from April 7, 2001 (middle). The left-hand and middle images extend from central Manchuria near the top to portions of North and South Korea at the bottom. They are approximately 380 kilometers in width.Asia's desert areas are prone to soil erosion, as underground water tables are lowered by prolonged drought...

We present a first-principles analysis of the strain renormalization of the cation diffusivity on the GaAs(001) surface. For the example of In/GaAs(001)-c(4x4) it is shown that the binding of In is increased when the substrate lattice is expanded. The diffusion barrier \Delta E(e) has a non-monotonic strain dependence with a maximum at compressive strain values (e < 0), while being a decreasing function for any tensile strain (e > 0) studied. We discuss the consequences of spatial...

We present Hubble Space Telescope measurements of surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) distances to early-type galaxies that have hosted Type Ia supernovae (SNIa). The agreement in the relative SBF and SNIa multicolor light curve shape and delta-m_15 distances is excellent. There is no systematic scale error with distance, and previous work has shown that SBF and SNIa give consistent ties to the Hubble flow. However, we confirm a systematic offset of about 0.25 mag in the distance zero points...

SeaWiFS provided a cloud-free view of a large phytoplankton bloom in the Celtic Sea in this image captured on May 21, 2001. The brightness of the water suggests that this may be a coccolithophore bloom. The bloom, which looks a bit like a stylized "F" and "e" tipped over backwards, covers an area roughly 35,000 square kilometers (approximately 13,000 square miles). Sensor: OrbView-2/SeaWiFS. Detailed predictions for dilepton production from $p A$ reactions at SIS energies are presented within a semi-classical BUU transport model that includes the off-shell propagation of vector mesons nonperturbatively and calculates the width of the vector mesons dynamically. Different scenarios of in-medium modifications of vector mesons, such as collisional broadening and dropping vector meson masses, are investigated and the possibilities for an experimental observation of in-medium effects in...

Coherence, multiple scattering and the interplay between soft and hard processes are discussed. These physics phenomena are essential for understanding the nuclear dependences of rapidity density and $p_T$ spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The RHIC data have shown the onset of hard processes and indications of high $p_T$ spectra suppression due to parton energy loss. Within the pQCD parton model, the combination of azimuthal anisotropy ($v_2$) and hadron spectra suppression at large...

In this paper I extend the results of Ahmad & Cohen (1973), regarding the study of the probability distribution of the stochastic force in homogeneous gravitational systems, to inhomogeneous gravitational ones. To this aim, I study the stochastic force distribution using N-body realizations of Plummer's spherically symmetric models. I find that the stochastic force distribution obtained for the evolved system is in good agreement with Kandrup's (1980) theory of stochastic force in...

We report the discovery of a extremely narrow, extremely linear, ionized filament. The filament is 2.5 degrees long and has an H$\alpha$ surface brightness of 0.5 rayleighs. The filament is approximately ``Y'' shaped. The widest separation of the two diagonal segments is 5 arcminutes. We discuss four possible origins for this feature: (1) an extremely low density, nearby jet, (2) an unusually linear filament associated with some large-scale nearby nebula, perhaps even the Local Bubble, (3) an...

We calculate a one loop effective action of SU(2) QCD in the presence of the monopole background, and find a possible connection between the resulting QCD effective action and a generalized Skyrme-Faddeev action of the non-linear sigma model. The result is obtained using the gauge-independent decomposotion of the gauge potential into the topological degrees which describes the non-Abelian monopoles and the local dynamical degrees of the potential, and integrating out all the dynamical degrees...

This paper is to explore a model of the ABS Algorithms for dealing with a class of systems of linear stochastic equations A xi=eta satisfying eta sim N_m(v, I_{m}). It is shown that the iteration step alpha_{i} is N(V,\pi) and approximation solutions is xi_{i} \sim N_n(U,\Sigma) for this algorithm model. And some properties of (V,\pi)$ and $(U,\Sigma) are given.

It is postulated that the action of the FRW-universe is the cosmological term of Einsteins theory (no curvature term - R0 Cosmology). The expansion equation emerging from the embedding of this most simple brane world with variable speed of light is deduced. The universal dimensionless coupling constant of gravity is addressed. Some implications on the deep problems of cosmology are discussed.

We propose a feasible scheme to create $n$-party ($n\geq 2$) polarization-entangled photon states in a controllable way. The scheme requires only single-photon sources, single-photon quantum non-demolition measurement (SP-QNDM) and simple linear optical elements, usually with high perfections. The SP-QNDM acts as a non-destructive projection measurement onto the wanted entangled states and filters out the unwanted terms. Our scheme in fact realizes entanglement of non-interacting photons; the...

We study an integrable model of one-dimensional strongly correlated electrons at finite temperature by explicit calculation of the correlation lengths of various correlation functions. The model is invariant with respect to the quantum superalgebra U_q(sl(2|1)) and characterized by the Hubbard interaction, correlated hopping and pair-hopping terms. Using the integrability, the graded quantum transfer matrix is constructed. From the analyticity of its eigenvalues, a closed set of non-linear...

We demonstrate that spin-charge separation can occur in two dimensions and note its confluence with superconductivity, topology, gauge theory, and fault-tolerant quantum computation. We construct a microscopic Ising-like model and, at a special coupling constant value, find its exact ground state as well as neutral spin 1/2 (spinon), spinless charge e (holon), and $Z_2$ vortex (vison) states and energies. The fractionalized excitations reflect the topological order of the ground state which is...

We introduce a sandpile model where, at each unstable site, all grains are transferred randomly to downstream neighbors. The model is local and conservative, but not Abelian. This does not appear to change the universality class for the avalanches in the self-organized critical state. It does, however, introduce long-range spatial correlations within the metastable states. We find large scale networks of occupied sites whose density vanishes in the thermodynamic limit, for d>1.

We studied the melting of the charge order in the half-doped tetragonal perovskite La1.5Sr0.5CoO4 by elastic neutron scattering. We found that diffuse peaks, corresponding to the breathing-type modulation of oxygen positions in the CoO6 octahedra, disappear above Tc = 825(27) K. This melting of the diffuse superstructure is reversible (no change in the correlation lengths upon annealing is observed) and accompanied by a large nonlinear thermal expansion along the tetragonal c-axis, with a cusp...

Massive stars form in clusters within self-gravitating molecular clouds. The size scale of these clusters is sufficiently large that non-thermal, or turbulent, motions of the gas must be taken into account when considering their formation. Millimeter wavelength radio observations of the gas and dust in these clouds reveal a complex, self-similar structure that reflects the turbulent nature of the gas. Differences are seen, however, towards dense bound cores in proto-clusters. Examination of the...
