An investigation was conducted to find the most environmentally acceptable and cost effective means of reclaiming or disposing of waste Navy colored smoke compositions. It is shown that the number of different kinds of excess smoke devices, the quantity related to the different kinds, cost of reclaim of each kind, and total quantity dictated that a disposal method be developed. The method of disposal chosen was incineration. A stainless steel incinerator with a 2.3 meter pathlength was...

Deriving its rationale from the communication concept of gatekeeping, this research explored the interaction between Information Officers and their Commanders as that interaction impacts upon the Air Force information program. The study involved a census survey of Information Officers and their Commanders. The results of these surveys identified three potential problem areas: (1) different conceptions of the IOs' experience and related credibility problems; (2) dissimilar perceptions of the...

The objective of this project was to develop manufacturing methods necessary to reduce the high machining cost associated with high-strength castings and forgings currently used in Army missile systems. The project aimed at developing the squeeze casting process for the purpose of (1) lowering the cost of the castings with minimum subsequent machining requirements, (2) casting preforms to replace more costly forged preforms for subsequent shear spinning, and (3) developing the process for a...

A convenient method for preparing compounds in the system TiO(2-x)F(x) is described and the photoelectrolytic behavior of TiO(2-x) and TiO(2-x)F(x) anodes has been investigated. It was found that the substitution of small amounts of fluorine for oxygen in TiO2 increases the photocurrent output which arises from increased response at the longer wavelengths. The improved response may be attributed to the increase in depletion layer width which is supported by an observed increase in resistivity....

Two (2) dispensers for high altitude (85,000 ft.) release of smoke puffs were designed, developed and flight tested in support of Air Force Geophysics Lab stratospheric turbulence studies. Each self-contained dispenser provided environmental protection and sequentially ejected six (6) smoke puff canisters containing equal weights of TiCl4 and a 50/50 Water-Methanol mixture. Canisters were functioned 100 feet below the balloon platform via a tethered lanyard. (Author)

It was the purpose of this project to provide the tools which allow efficiency comparisons between fuze related two and three pass step-up gear trains of different tooth geometries which are subject to operation in a spin environment. To this end mathematical models of such gear trains with both involute and ogival tooth shapes have been developed. These models allow, by way of moment input-output relationships, the determination of point and cycle efficiencies of the gear trains. Pivot...

The extent of the plastically deformed region associated with indentation in silicon carbide is determined by means of selected area electron channeling. It is found that the extent of the plastic zone beneath an indent is quite large, i.e., equal to about five times the impression radius. Microcrack formation is studied in the SEM, and the combined results are discussed in terms of current elastic-plastic indentation fracture models. The first cracks to form are radial microcracks; their...

Equipment has been developed and demonstrated capable of extending and directing a moving loop of line and maintaining it standing essentially horizontally over variable ranges as though it were a rigid structure. Theoretical data were confirmed by tests indicating that line can be deployed and precisely directed with a power requirement of one horsepower per one hundred feet of range at any angle to the vertical. With further development the equipment is expected to be useful where...

There is a critical need for standardization of K sub Iscc test procedures to assure the documentation of only valid data. An important area of concern is the development of realistic specimen requirements which are applicable to K sub Iscc tests rather than adopting those used in K sub IC determinations. The present studies were aimed at systematically evaluating the effects of specimen thickness, ligament length, and initial crack length on the threshold for stress-corrosion crack growth K...
