The Independent was an American magazine published weekly between 1848 and 1928. First edited by three prominent Congregational ministers—Joseph Parrish Thompson, Richard Salter Storrs, and Leonard Bacon—the periodical initially covered religious affairs while promoting Congregationalism in the United States. 

The magazine’s focus shifted during the nineteenth century to providing more political coverage, including vocal support for such movements as abolitionism and women's suffrage. It also published poetry and other literary works from a number of distinguished writers, including Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Emma Lazarus, John Greenleaf Whittier and James Russell Lowell. 

At the turn of the twentieth century, the magazine absorbed three other magazines—The Chautauquan (1914), Harper's Weekly (1916), and The Countryside Magazine and Suburban Life (1917)—before merging with The Weekly Review in 1921. In 1928, it ceased publication and was incorporated into The Outlook to form The Outlook and Independent.
